What is Intrauterine Insemination?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure where a large amount of healthy sperm is placed in the uterus as close to the time of ovulation as possible. It often is used with medications such as Clomid or Letrozole to time ovulation (release of egg) with intrauterine insemination. The woman’s partner or a donor may provide the sperm.

Who is a candidate for IUI?

IUI is useful for:

• Male infertility: When semen analysis is abnormal (low sperm count or low motility)
• Unexplained infertility: When no cause is found for infertility, this has been shown to increase pregnancy rates.
• Female infertility: Women who do not ovulate (release egg) may benefit from IUI.

Who is NOT a candidate for IUI?

• Both fallopian tubes blocked
• Ovarian Failure (menopause)
• Severe male factor infertility: If sperm count or motility is very low, patients may need IVF to become pregnant.
• Severe Endometriosis
• Women who have not become pregnant with timed intercourse after three to six cycles with ovulation medications such as Clomid or Letrozole.

How is it done?

1. The woman is given medications to stimulate development of eggs, and IUI is timed to coincide with ovulation (release of eggs).
   
   
2. A semen specimen is produced in a private collection room by masturbation after a few days of abstinence.
   
   
3. The semen is “washed” in the laboratory. This separates the sperm from other components of semen and concentrated in a small volume. Sperm washing takes 30-60 minutes.
   
   
4. The female patient then has a speculum placed in the vagina and the cervix is gently cleaned.
   
   
5. The washed specimen of highly motile sperm is placed into the uterus with a small tube.
   
   
6. Afterward, you do not need to worry about the sperm falling out and no activity restrictions are recommended.

What are the risks of IUI?

If ovulation drugs are used with intrauterine insemination, multiple pregnancy can occur. If too many eggs are developing at the time of insemination, the insemination may be canceled.

What if IUI doesn’t work?

If you do not become pregnant after three cycles of IUI, referral to a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist is recommended as IVF may be required to get pregnant.

What does IUI cost?

Before starting an IUI cycle, we will have you meet with our billing specialists to review your insurance policy to see if infertility treatment is covered. If not, the cash pricing will be reviewed with you. Typically an IUI cycle cost with medications is approximately $1000-1300.
