Fertility Care

Video Transcription: Hello. I'm Dr. Jessica Herzberg. Here at Moreland OB-GYN, we understand the emotional and physical strain infertility has on couples. We offer a variety of fertility services for couples looking to conceive including fertility evaluations, preconception counseling, and fertility education. We also provide several services for treatment for fertility including Intrauterine Insemination or IUI which is done here in our clinic. As always, it's Moreland OB-GYN's goal to lead women to better health.

No one expects they will face fertility challenges as they try to get pregnant. At Moreland OB-GYN, we understand the physical and emotional strain couples experience during this difficult time. The truth is infertility is more common now than in decades past.

Fertility statistics:

  • The likelihood of getting pregnant each month is only 20%.
  • Over the first year of trying, 85% of couples will get pregnant.
  • In the second year of trying, 5-10% who did not conceive within the first year will get pregnant.

At Moreland OB-GYN, we are at the front lines of fertility testing and evaluation and we offer fertility treatments as well. Learn more with our resources below.

Note: While we offer procedures and treatments designed to address various infertility issues and improve the likelihood of natural conception, it is important to note we do not provide In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) services. If you require IVF, we can provide referrals to specialized fertility centers or collaborate with reputable IVF clinics to ensure you receive the comprehensive care and support you need.

When to Talk to Your Doctor About Fertility

Schedule an appointment with your OB-GYN if you have decided you are ready to start trying to become pregnant within the next year. You can also consult your doctor if you’re not sure whether pregnancy is right for you. It may help to explore the idea with an expert in pregnancy care.

Preconception counseling is a great way to ensure you are as healthy as possible for a potential pregnancy. It can also help to keep you ahead of any underlying issues you may not have considered. If you are contemplating pregnancy or currently trying to conceive, schedule an appointment with your doctor to help you understand how best to proceed.

What is Preconception Counseling?

If you’re hoping to start a family, the best way to begin is to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Write down any questions you may have ahead of time. Your doctor will ask you about the following:

  • Menstrual cycles
  • Past medical/surgical history
  • Allergies
  • Infection history
  • Sexual history
  • Family history of genetic diseases
  • Social history including smoking, alcohol, and drug use

A consult with your doctor before you start trying to get pregnant is a great way to increase your chance of a successful pregnancy. A preconception appointment will allow you and your doctor to identify possible issues and manage chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. These conditions can cause higher risks of pregnancy complications and increase the risk of miscarriage.

If you are currently taking any medications regularly, we recommend you talk with your provider to ensure your medications are safe for conception and pregnancy.

During a preconception consult, your doctor will help you understand how to prepare your body for optimal fertility and pregnancy.

How to Prepare for Pregnancy

  • Stop smoking
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Review your current list of medications with your doctor

To help your body prepare for pregnancy, you should add a prenatal vitamin to their daily regime that includes 400 mcg of folic acid. This can reduce the risk of neural tube defects, which affect the skull and spine of the baby.

Fertility Testing

If you are at risk for infertility, struggling with conceiving, or just thinking about starting a family at an older age, your doctor may talk to you about specific fertility testing options.

Before any testing begins, your doctor will discuss your medical history in detail. This information can often help your doctor determine which testing pathway might be the best for your individual circumstances.

There are a number of tests available to both women and men, learn more about available fertility testing options.

Additional Therapy

For many couples struggling to concieve, the added stress and emotions that accompany infertility can lead to communication challenges and even anxiety or depression.

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, is often recommended to help individuals and couples learn to cope with the difficult aspects of fertility.

In addition to counseling, some people find acupuncture, massage, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness-based therapy helpful to promote relaxation and to recharge their body and mind.
